Additional Approvals for Regulated Activities

Not every business activity can be licensed through standard company registration alone. Certain sectors are considered “regulated” because they affect public health, safety, financial stability or other public interests — and they require sign-off from a specific sector regulator before a commercial license can be issued.

Activities that commonly need additional approval include:

  • Financial and investment services, which may require approval from the relevant financial regulator
  • Healthcare, clinics and medical services
  • Education and training centres
  • Security services
  • Food production, import and related activities
  • Media, broadcasting and telecommunications

These approvals are separate from, and in addition to, your standard commercial registration and license. They often involve their own application, fees and processing time — which can extend your overall setup timeline beyond a straightforward, non-regulated business.

Confirming whether your activity is regulated should happen before you choose a jurisdiction or sign an office lease, since regulatory approval requirements can affect your timeline, costs and even where you are permitted to operate.

Not sure if your activity needs extra approval?
